Abstract: Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have evolved to overcome the inherent limitations of the Internet in terms of user perceived Quality of Service (QoS) when accessing Web content. A CDN replicates content from the origin server to cache servers, scattered over the globe, in order to deliver content to end-users in a reliable and timely manner from nearby optimal surrogates. Content distribution on the Internet has received considerable research attention. It combines development of high-end computing technologies with high performance networking infrastructure and distributed replica management techniques. Over the last decade, considerable research efforts and momentum have been directed into this sphere, both from the academia and the commercial developers. It could undoubtedly be considered as one of the top emerging technologies that will have a major impact on the quality of science and society over the next 20 years. Having said that a glimpse of the technological trends and future directions in this domain would be helpful to position researchers and practitioners at the forefront of the field.
