Abstract: | Enzymes are natural catalysts. They are produced by living organisms to increase the rate of an immense and diverse set of chemical reactions required for life. They are involved in all processes essential for life such as DNA replication and transcription, protein synthesis, metabolism and signal transduction, etc. And their ability to perform very specific chemical transformations has made them increasingly useful in industrial processes. Enzymes are among the most important products obtained for human needs through microbial sources. An enzyme works by binding to a given substrate in such a geometrical fashion that the substrate is able to undergo its inherent reaction at a more rapid rate. The enzyme does not actually react with the substrate but merely brings the substrate in to the proper alignment or configuration for it to react spontaneously or in conjunction with other molecules. Enzymes have been used by man throughout the ages. The history of modern enzyme technology really started in the 19th century; Current developments in biotechnology are yielding new applications for enzymes. |
